Jiri Barta, one of the foremost cellists of younger generation, studied in Prague with Josef Chuchro, in Cologne with Boris Pergamenschikow and in Los Angeles with Eleonore Schoenfeld. He took masterclasses with Heinrich Schiff and Andre Navarra. In 1991 he was awarded the Europäische Förderpreis für Musik in Dresden and the Rostropovich-Hammer Award in Los Angeles.

Jiri has performed as both chamber musician and concerto soloist with leading artists at major halls and festivals throughout Europe, North & South Americas, Japan and Australia: Wigmore Hall London, Palau de la Música Barcelona, Théatre des Champs-Elysées Paris, Ankara, Australian Chamber Music Festivals, Expo Japan 2005, Berlin, Bratislava, Brighton, Dresden, Edinburgh, Lugano, Newport, Salzburg etc.. He appears regularly at the prestigious Czech music events – Prague Spring Festival, Concentus Moraviae Int. Music Festival, Strings of Autumn International Music Festival and participates in the Czech Dreams project. He has been featured on national television in most European countries as well as broadcast on many radio stations.

In 2004 on a Supraphon label, Jiri Barta has released the Dvorak Cello concerto with Czech Philharmonic / Jiri Bělohlávek, a live recording of performance commemorating Dvorak‘s 100 year’s anniversary. His CD from 2003 with Kodaly Cello works received prestigious Gramophon Editor’s Choice (January 04). His project "Reflections" was voted the best Czech CD recording of 1999 and won "Harmony Award" of 2000"(annual award given to the best classical recordings by "Harmonie" music magazine in Prague), as well as top rating and "Klassik Heute Empfehlung" by German magazine "Klassik Heute". His other Supraphon recordings include critically acclaimed complete Bach Cello suites and a live recording of both cello concertos by Dmitry Shostakovich with Maxim Shostakovich as a conductor. The DVD recording "Jiri Barta plays Dvorak" (Cello concerto with Prague Symphony conducted by Gaetano Delogu) was released in Japan by Dreamline Corp. in 1999. Jiri Barta collaborated with mezzosoprano Magdalena Kozena on her " Lieder" project for Detsche Grammophon, awarded by Gramophone Award in London 2005. His recording project for Hyperion released in 2007 includes premiere recording of Ignaaz Moscheles Cello Sonata. In 2007 he also recorded chamber works by Chopin for Supraphon (with pianist Martin Kasik and violinist Jan Talich).

Jiri Bárta has always been interested in period instruments and interpretation. He also has a long history of advocating new music, and has premiered works written for him by leading Czech composers such as Petr Eben, Marek Kopelent, Petr Pokorný, Peter Graham and Pavel Zemek.

Jiri Barta plays a Gagliano cello of 1785.
